“Before enlightenment: Chop wood, carry water. After enlightenment: Chop wood, carry water.”
Last month we looked at a paraphrased version of this quote, or perhaps the original version of this quote. Really it is the same message. I chose to include this version anyway for a few reasons. One reason is it is an important point to emphasize that the path to enlightenment is to enjoy and be fully involved with daily life, one thing at a time. Another reason is that some people only see the shortened version of this quote and are not clear as to what it is referring to, as it is seemingly out of context.
What is important to remember is that in modern times this has mostly become symbolism. Most of us do not need to chop wood and carry water, but some of us do. Do not take this quote literally. Whatever it is that we do, we should do it, and do it well. Be mindful only of the task at hand, that is the path.
