Rather than fight fire with fire, use water. When treated unintelligently by someone else, let’s say by rude or childish insults, we should respond intelligently, let’s say by not responding with similarly childish insults. I commute in a big city and used to be confused when opposing pedestrian traffic would take up more than their share of the walkway, heading right towards me, apparently bracing for a collision.
We do not have to be happy with everything that happens each day, but we should know this: Even though we may not be able to change or prevent these events, we can change our attitude and reaction to them.
We must keep our words sheathed, ready but knowing that unless we want to do damange, we should wait to speak until we know how to control the words that come out.
