“We cannot see our reflection in running water. It is only in still water that we can see.”
We need reminders to quiet our thoughts, quiet our minds. It is very difficult to be mindful and reflect on ourselves with many other thoughts running through our heads. These thoughts can be desires, anger, worries, and concerns about the past or future. We must learn to quiesce these thoughts, to slow our faucet of incoming thoughts so the water this is our mind is still. Our minds are quiet.
We are focused on this here and now. We are focused on reading these words. We are focused on quiescing the mind. In this still water we can see our reflection. We can see ourselves clearly, and should be able to see the root of our suffering. Remember, suffering is big and small. It is not just the victims of horrible natural disasters that suffer. Everyone suffers. When we can let go of our own suffering, we are truly happy.
We can now focus on the suffering of others with true compassion.
